The Bill Manager expense manager website was launched on October 7 to help those in college and just starting out in the real world manage their bills and bank accounts without letting budgeting overwhelm their lives.
Using this site is free of charge. It offers a monthly expense calendar that allows users to track recurring expenses as well as bill due dates with detailed breakdowns of dates, amounts, and account names. There are also articles offering financial tricks and tips for managing personal finances, updated weekly.
The expense manager is completely secure and no bank account information or other confidential information such as social security numbers are ever required for registration. User passwords are encrypted with non-reversible encryption and the site is maintained daily to prevent hacker attacks or email interception. The site currently tracks over $20,000 worth of user transactions daily.
Other features include upcoming and past expenses that let you see past payments and future payments and calculate monthly expenses a month ahead. There is also a way to automate accounts so that recurring expenses are carried over from month to month. Users can also access a reports section, which is useful for seeing current spending, either by month or year.
Creator Javier Martinez emphasizes that the philosophy of the site is to keep it simple. He built it out of his own personal finance management habits, starting with simply Yahoo calendars and an Excel spreadsheet. He built a program in Access to track expenses more carefully, but this was still not exactly what he was looking for. At the request of friends, he built a program with the main emphasis being that it could be tracked from any computer connected to the Internet.
Martinez is in close touch with users and takes their feedback seriously in creating a better product because his friends were the ones who helped him to make the program into its current flexible, uncomplicated incarnation. He has over four years of web development experience and currently works as a lead web developer. As the site grows, he hopes to devote more time to adding more options for a wider variety of financial lifestyles.
He hopes that the site will become a flexible tool for college students as well as anyone else who has several accounts they would like to track automatically and are tired of having budget planning complicate their lives.
